The California Apartments are located just west of the United Center. The development entailed the 1985 rehabilitation of a historic Queen Anne style building (circa 1930) into one bedroom rental apartments. The building was substantially updated in 2009. All apartments feature new gas appliances, refrigerators, window treatments and wall-to-wall carpeting. All kitchens and baths have new plumbing fixtures, ceramic wall tile and VCT flooring. All building mechanical systems – plumbing, HVAC and electrical – have been substantially renovated. California Apartments is within walking distance of several public transit systems, including buses and the CTA Green Line. The major nearby east/west thoroughfares are Washington Boulevard and Madison Street.
In the main, California serves the affordable housing needs of Senior Citizens. Most of California’s Senior residents hold Section 8 Rental Vouchers although non – Senior Section 8 holders are welcome along with market rate tenants. Rents average $775 per month. All utilities including heat are separately metered and resident paid.
